Day 19: Wet


July 24:  We left Alberta. We drove. It rained. It’s chilly. We’re in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. We will not come back here.
Lone Star Hotel.  Smells, some stains on mattress pads, not as clean as it could be, out of date bathroom.  Not recommended! Nice dinner at Boston Pizza, though.

Day 5: Into Manitoba

July 10:  We’re in Manitoba!  Woo hoo! From a great day to not-as-great.  We ran into roadworks in both Ontario and Manitoba which both slowed things down and made them tedious.  What should have been a relatively decent 4 hour drive or less took 5, and we both had headaches and no energy when we arrived.  Add in the stress of driving into the downtown of an unknown city.  Anyway… Really liked Kenora; so pretty on Lake of the Woods.  It reminded me of Haliburton but much bigger. It’s so interesting seeing the changes in landscape.  After the hills, rocks and deep green evergreens of northwestern Ontario, we segued into deciduous and FLAT.  Oh my goodness, southern Manitoba is flat!  I guess it is part of the prairies!  It made for boring boring driving, though. Day 10: Stampede day!

July 15:  Left in good time and headed through to the Hoodoo Trail to Drumheller.  Eventually found some hoodoos but not the canyon-like ones I was looking for!  Lyndsey climbed up the rock for the view but I didn’t think my Mephistos would give a very good grip. Plus the world’s largest dinosaur.  (Although, if it doesn’t actually have a dinosaur skeleton, does it really count as a dinosaur??)  Made it to Calgary around 1 and went to stay with my cousin Bob and his wife Doreen.  After a nice lunch we headed to the Stampede.  A native Albertan and I’d never been to the Stampede. It was truly a multi-sensory experience, with all the smells of the various food stalls (deep-fried Oreos, anyone?), the bright colours of the Native dancers’ costumes, the thundering hooves of the horses in the chuckwagon races.  Difficult to capture.  The grandstand show, for which my cousin gave Lyndsey and I their wonderful seats because they’d already seen...

Day 21: Serendipity

My daily view July 26:  Back into Manitoba!  Unfortunately, more straight-as-an-arrow roads.   We stopped for lunch and a stroll by the beach at a charming park in Minnedosa, Manitoba (no, I didn’t spell that wrong).  A town of only 2,500 with this lovely lake and beach in its centre.  Then later we stumbled upon Margaret Laurence’s former home in Neepawa -- the town from which she borrowed liberally for her fictional creation of Manawaka.  I really like her books; I’m so delighted we just happened by the site.  This is the sort of thing we wanted to be able to do to be spontaneous!  Tonight we are in west Winnipeg, near the highway we want for tomorrow.  No pool, but we took a short walk through the park behind the hotel.
